How to Visit Gola su Gorropu: Fee, Hours and the Three Trailheads

There is no exception to the cash-only rule at the moment, and no way to reserve a slot for a specific date, so this is one hike where showing up with the right change matters more than showing up with a phone full of confirmation emails. The base camp sits on the SS125 at km 190.500, and the same office can arrange off-road transfers, guided treks at several difficulty levels, canyoning descents and night excursions. Transfer prices are not published, so confirm the current figure with the concessionaire directly, by phone or on the day, rather than budgeting a number you have not verified.

All three routes end at the same gorge mouth, but the experience of getting there is completely different depending on which one you pick.

The Genna 'e Silana route is the one most independent hikers underestimate. The descent feels manageable because gravity is doing the work, and then the same 650 metres of loose limestone track has to be climbed back out at the end of a long day, in the heat, on tired legs. The Sa Barva approach from Dorgali trades that steep finish for more time on your feet along the river, which suits people who would rather walk longer on flat ground than climb hard for twenty minutes.

Neither approach is objectively easier; they simply front-load the effort differently, and knowing your own preference for a hard finish versus a long middle stretch is the real question to answer before you pick a trailhead.

For Genna 'e Silana, park along the SS125 near the pass at roughly km 183. The road is the main route between Dorgali and the interior, and the pull-offs near the trailhead fill early on summer weekends, so arriving before nine gives you a real choice of spot rather than a long walk back to the car before the hike has even started.

For Sa Barva, the drive from Dorgali covers about 15 km, and the final stretch is unpaved, so a low-clearance rental car should take it slowly rather than fast. This is the trailhead most visitors reach as part of a guided day, since the Gorropu hike from Cala Gonone and the full-day trek from Dorgali both handle the transfer as part of the price, which removes the unpaved-road question entirely.

The Urzulei / base camp side is reached along the SS125 as well, and this is the side the concessionaire's own vehicles use for transfers, guided treks and canyoning trips, so independent drivers rarely start from here unless they have booked directly with Chintula.

The approach trails themselves, on any of the three sides, do not require a guide. What changes the calculation is how far into the gorge you intend to go. Most visitors walk in to the gorge mouth, stand under walls that climb toward 500 metres, and turn back satisfied, having covered ground that is a proper hike but still a walking trail, not a scramble.

Past the entrance, the floor of the gorge turns into a boulder field: car-sized blocks polished smooth by the river, wedged and stacked in ways that force a scramble rather than a walk. Beyond the boulder chokes, sections of the canyon are graded for canyoning, not hiking, and that is genuinely different terrain requiring rope work and technical gear. A drinking-water point sits near the entrance, but there is none on the trails themselves, and phone coverage inside the gorge is unreliable to non-existent, so the sensible plan is to treat 'a bit further' as a decision made before you leave the water point, not one made boulder by boulder.

Doing Gorropu independently costs almost nothing beyond the entry ticket itself: €6 for an adult, plus whatever it takes to get yourself to a trailhead and back. If you already have a rental car and are comfortable navigating an unpaved stretch of road, that can be the cheapest hiking day in Sardinia by a wide margin.

What independent access does not solve is the transfer to Sa Barva or the base camp side, the interpretation of what you are actually looking at once you're inside the gorge, and the judgment call about how far to go past the boulder chokes. The Orosei or Dorgali day runs $74 (about €64) for eight hours with hotel pickup included, and the Cala Gonone route runs $95 (about €82) for six hours with a 4x4 transfer and a Sardinian lunch built in. Once you price in a rental car, fuel, and the time spent finding the trailhead yourself, the guided price stops looking like a premium and starts looking like a fair trade for someone else solving the logistics.

The honest split: a confident, well-prepared solo or duo hiker with a rental car saves real money going independent, especially from Genna 'e Silana where no transfer is needed at all. Anyone travelling without a car, anyone who wants the lunch and the local knowledge built into the day, and anyone uneasy about the unpaved road to Sa Barva comes out ahead going guided. Either way, the gorge itself rewards showing up early, since the light inside the canyon is best before midday and the entrance road gets busier as the morning goes on.
